Crafting Tranquility in Dallas
As a designer, creating and planning the primary bedroom suite with our client in Dallas was a privilege and a joy. With our client relocating from California, their affinity for their existing bedroom furniture meant we had an exciting opportunity to sustainably reuse the furniture they loved. I recall curating that furniture collection just a few years ago and remember it as a fun and vibrant experience that yielded a beautiful bedroom suite for their California home.
Color Selection
From the outset of planning the design for the client’s California home, we knew that soft colors would be the foundation of our design. Drawing inspiration from spa-like serenity, we curated a palette that would envelop the room in tranquility. Soft blues blended effortlessly with soothing grays, creating a sophisticated and calming canvas.
Additional Furniture Selection and Design Choices
Our client's open-mindedness allowed for my recommendation for not-so-traditional pieces, rather than usual stained bedroom furniture. This led to the introduction of beautiful blue-hued nightstands. The look was achieved by covering the furniture in grasscloth wallpaper! We also paired marble side tables with gray accessories, which added a sense of elegance while retaining a feeling of warmth.
Functionality was also a key consideration throughout the renovation process. Swivel chairs not only provided comfort but also allowed our client to enjoy the lush, green views outside through her expansive windows—a feature we wanted to highlight and celebrate. By selecting a Christopher Farr Cloth fabric for covering the chairs we added an additional layer of texture and chic style!
Speaking of windows…we selected black windows throughout the home, and in the primary bedroom suite, the black finish fantastically grounded the airy palette and gave it a sense of weight and prominence.
Bedding Selection
We love recommending that our clients choose mostly white bedding with accent pillows. Not only does this establish a serene backdrop, but it also offers versatility for future updates—an aspect we value greatly in our designs.
Layering Textures
When designing an entire room or space, textures must be carefully considered and planned. We selected pieces that would add depth and softness to the room.
Bedroom Lighting
A well-designed bedroom has lighting options that accommodate various moods and activities, from soothing relaxation to focused reading. It's imperative to offer a range of lighting choices, including soft, natural, bright, and adjustable options. Incorporating dimmer switches into every light fixture allows for effortless customization. Furthermore, the shape and strategic placement of lighting fixtures and shades play pivotal roles in crafting a visually appealing bedroom. Each element contributes to the overall aesthetic and functionality of the space, highlighting the importance of attention to detail in bedroom lighting design.
Another way we prioritize light control is through motorized Roman shades. These shades offer softness and texture, convenience, and privacy at the touch of a button.
The Primary Bath
One initial design challenge in the primary bath was how to manage and plan for an expansive wall of windows. Balancing light control and privacy was key. Therefore, we opted for an elegant solution—placing mirrors over top of them. This not only maximized natural light, but also added a touch of sophistication to the space. Much like the windows throughout the home, the black finish on the mirrors grounded the lighter color palette of this bathroom.
We also created a makeup vanity, in a lower, seated position. A full glass shower and freestanding tub were decisions rooted in both functionality and aesthetics, enhancing the overall sense of luxury and relaxation.
In the bathroom, we also added remote-controlled solar shades. These custom roller shades added privacy and more light control.

The primary bedroom suite was more than just a space—it was a reflection of our client's personality and aspirations. With every choice made, we aimed to craft an environment where comfort, elegance, and tranquility met. Through collaboration with our client, creativity, and a deep understanding of our client's needs, we succeeded in creating a bedroom haven with timeless appeal!
