A Designer's Guide to Hosting
There's something special about welcoming guests into your home - and after designing countless spaces for clients, I've learned that true hospitality lies in the details. Let's summarize how to create a space that makes guests feel genuinely cared for without overcomplicated fuss. (For even more details- our full Guest Prep Checklist can be downloaded here!)
The Bedding Situation Let's start with the non-negotiables: You need four pillows: two firm and two soft. Every guest has a preference, and this simple addition turns a basic bed into a personalized sleep sanctuary. Add high-thread-count white sheets (400+here! count), a medium-weight duvet, and extra blanket options nearby. Think of it as building a cozy cocoon for your visitors.
The Essential Extras A few strategic additions make all the difference:
A sturdy luggage rack (because living out of a suitcase shouldn't mean bending down to the floor)
A full-length mirror for outfit checks
A vanity mirror with magnification (trust me on this one)
Water carafe and glasses by the bed
A visible clock (I love a simple digital display)
Easy-access charging station with various cable options
Bathroom Brilliance: Here's where thoughtfulness really shines. Create a little station with travel-sized essentials: toothbrushes, toothpaste, pain relievers, bandages, hair ties, and even makeup removal wipes. It's about something other than having a fully stocked pharmacy - it's about those small items guests commonly forget or feel awkward asking for.
The Day-Of Details Before guests arrive:
Fresh water bottles and glasses on the nightstand
Quick room airing-out session
Temperature adjustment (slightly cooler is better than too warm)
A simple welcome note with WiFi details and any house quirks (like that tricky shower handle)
And because I believe in making life easier, I've curated a collection of these items on Amazon - all tested, all approved, all ready to transform your guest space into something special.
For all my hosts out there already thinking, "This seems like a lot" - remember that most of these items are one-time purchases that make every future guest's stay smoother. Plus, there's something deeply satisfying about being the host who thinks of everything.
Until next time, Courtney
